War and agriculture were intimately connected in the development of the Canadian West. This collection of essays focuses on "Western Canada in the Era of the Rebellion" and "The Agriculture Experience in Western Canada." In an autobiographical essay, G.F.G. Stanley provides unique insights into his career as a Canadian historian.
Conflict between the aboriginal population and settlers was inevitable after 1870. Brian Titley explores Hayter Reed's administration of native peoples on the prairies which led to blunders that brought on the rebellion. The St. Catherine's Milling case, which established Canadian legal doctrine on native title to land, is examined by Donald Smith. Rota Herzberg Lister's paper concludes that the dramatizations of the North West Rebellion make it possible for contemporaries to establish relationships with historical figures such as Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. Maurice Doll's archaeological study of the Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement offers a unique look at the Metis buffalo robe trade. Gerhard Ens's intensive study of the Parish of St. Francois Xavier looks at the transition of Metis society.
Unrest in the 1880s in British Columbia is the focus of Patricia Roy's paper. The Edmonton and District Settlers' Rights Movement is examined by John F. Gilpin. In her paper on Manitoba from 1870 to 1885, Judith Wiesinger demonstrates that urban growth in the west was a rapid and irreversible process.
The First World War brought to fruition the idea of direct political action by farmers. James C. Gardiner's leadership, as David Smith's analysis reveals, provided western farmers with an effective united front. Ed Rea looks at the progressive movement and the leadership dilemmas that T.A. Crerar faced as president of the United Grain Growers.
