Puck and Sean were great characters that I enjoyed getting to know. The Capaill Uisce were an interesting magical aspect that made me want to read more. It wasn't a light book, but it slowly drew me in as these characters worked to find their place on the island.

This books is a twist of horses, fairy tales, romance, and fantasy. It's honestly sort of silly how well written this book is. Stiefvater is a talented writer, that's for sure, and this if hands-down my favorite of hers. The story swaps between two characters: Puck, a girl determined to keep her brother from leaving home, and Sean, a boy determined to keep his title as champion of the scorpio races. But what exactly are the scorpio races, you might ask? Each year on Puck's island, people come from all around to watch the race of fae horses--vicious creatures caught from the sea and tamed for just this occasion. There's just one problem--these horses like to eat their masters. When Puck enters the race with her 100% normal horse, everyone thinks she'll die before she even makes it to the finish line, everyone but Sean. This book is just magical. There's no other way to put it. The threads of fantasy and reality are so well interwoven, you won't know one from the other. A must read for any YA fantasy lover.

Unique book, well told by two narrators. I listened to the audio book and it was terrific. The story centers on the mythical water horses. You'll love it whether you love horses or not.

She completed her goal, to make a book I'd hold to my chest.

This is a very exciting adventure!
I love the characters, especially Puck, she is so strong and I reading about her makes me think about how I could be like her in my life. This is a great book!

This book had a really slow beginning but picked up a lot after about a hundred pages. The ending was pretty good but I didn't like how it ended with Sean's perspective. It was a good happy ending.

I've reread this book every fall for the past few years since it came out, and I love it more with each reading. The world-building is incredible--Thisby feels like a real, fully-developed place, man-eating horses and all--and the relationships between the characters and the various subtle undercurrents are so wonderfully written. A perfect read for October/November -- or any time of year, really, if you're in the mood to cry and fall in love with this beautifully written gem of a book.

Other: There are some very descriptive scenes of violence so if you do not like blood then....and there is the language, not alot but some. The book overall is good but if you are under 12 years of age,eh, not really for you. It has horses alright but the thing is, they are scary horses. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU DO NOT LIKE BLOOD.

On the island of Thisby, autumn brings with it the capall uisce -- fey "water horses" that long to drown or eat men. Since people can remember, the brave and foolish have tried to tame the horses in order to ride them in the Scorpio Races each November. Puck is an orphan who takes care of her three brothers. When she finds out her house will be taken from her if she doesn't pay for it, she enters herself in the Races -- the first girl ever to ride. Sean Kendrick is also an orphan, his father taken from him by the Races he loves. For him, winning the Race would mean getting everything he loves, his red water horse Corr and freedom. Even though Puck and Sean are competing, they are drawn to each other, two stubborn, determined and passionate souls. But will the Race tear them apart?
