I know the real family this was based on and the truth is twisted badly to make a book sale...sad deal the real family that helped so many would be painted like this. Lying should be illegal

Good book and a good movie. All the actors do a stellar job here depicting the life of a boy given away by his eccentric mother to her shrink. Loved Gwenyth Paltrow as the weird older sister. Benning did a great job as the mother.

Just about the most bizarre and twisted story I’ve ever encountered and frightening that it could be based on someone’s personal experiences. The cast did an excellent job, especially Annette Bening but what a sad tale.

Bah. Well acted and somewhat interesting biographical tale of a gay author. I just couldn't get into it and it seemed overlong. Sort of tried to be funny, but I wasn't laughing. The main character's story, although tragic, just didn't entertain me.

I kept praying for the movie to end. Thankfully, eventually, it did.

When you agree to watch a movie with your wife, you are obliged to finish what you started.

The movie either frustrated me or dragged on and on.

Annette Bening is wonderful as a bi-polar writer/mother (as well as Jill Clayburgh as Mrs. Finch) and I'm intrigued with the protaganist and want to read his book, but the movie itself kept referencing all those other awkward teenage coming of age stories with music thrown in to give you something to relate to. I kept feeling like I'd seen the story before, and didn't particularly care for any of those (except for Harold and Maude.) I suppose it could be considered a "black comedy" or absurd, but there's so much heartbreak in it, I don't understand how it qualifies as a "comedy."

The only worthwhile thing in this mess of a movie is Jill Clayberg. In a throw-away role she will break your heart. By contrast, Mrs. Beatty is so-o shrill you hope somebody will break her neck.

Dysfunction,if you can comprehend the definition, then you can appreciate this film! Thank god there's Valium in this world. American Beauty was another classic tale of real life situations that happen to succumb us to addictions and abuse . It is the films like this that help us overcome the realization that our lives are what the are, and that it is o.k. to just let go sometimes.

I found this movie to be a breath of fresh air as it is unlike any movie I have ever seen. The acting and script are equally fantastic, and this movie boasts a wonderful cast. I would highly recommend this to fans of off beat darker comedies.

Dumb stupid movie - and a complete waste of an audience's time!

It's also a complete waste of top talent like Annette Bening, Joseph Fiennes, Alec Baldwin, Jill Clayburgh, and Gwyneth Paltrow. And the lesser-knowns fair even worse.

Goes to show you that even Hollywood greats can't save a film when the directing sucks.

And Director Ryan Murphy, purported to be the creator of tv's Nip/Tuck - really sucks here!

He can't avoid the temptation of trying to create another "Royal Tenenbaums" - and in doing so - makes his movie even more boring and perverse than the Wes Anderson original.

If you want to waste 2 hours and 2 minutes of your time gazing at the antics of really tormented and over-psycho-analyzed characters struggling to find themselves and never really knowing who they are in the end - go ahead and rent this boring rant.

A better idea, however, would be to put a copy of the British black comedy "Death At A Funeral" on your "Holds" List - and see the same psychological anomalies at play within a family - but this time with realistic irony, wit, and a sense of pacing and great direction of a non-descript cast of characters who somehow manage to make "Death At A Funeral" a veritable joy to watch - unlike the ghastly "Running With Scissors"!

Dr. Finch: Well, the only loophole or way I could see me getting you out of school for any considerable length of time would be for you... to commit suicide.
Augusten Burroughs: You want me to kill myself?
Dr. Finch: Well, if you tried to kill yourself, I could explain to the schoolboard that you were psychologically unfit to attend, and that you needed intensive treatment. It would a staged suicide attempt. Of course, your poor mother would have to find you and drive you the hospital, where you would stay for three weeks or a month for observation.
Augusten Burroughs: I don't know. It doesn't...
Dr. Finch: Augusten. Where is your spirit of adventure?

Young Augusten Burroughs absorbs experiences that could make for a shocking memoir: the son of an alcoholic father and an unstable mother, he's handed off to his mother's therapist, Dr. Finch, and spends his adolescent years as a member of Finch's bizarre extended family.
