With Jay and Gloria's baby on the way and Haley going off to college, the entire Pritchett/Dunphy clan faces some major surprises as they bicker and bond over house-flipping headaches, unwanted play dates, and everything from hot-tempered hormones to in utero karaoke. Featuring a stellar array of guest stars including Matthew Broderick, Shelley Long and Elizabeth Banks, Season Four takes a heartfelt and laugh-out-loud hilarious look at what it means to be a Modern Family.

This fourth season is more of the same. Nothing new, frankly, even considering how the third season ended. SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! While the third season ended with Gloria discovering that she's pregnant, Haley heading off to college, and Cam and Mitch having their hopes to adopt a little boy thwarted, none of that excitement gets carried into the new seasons. Those story lines are essentially vetoed. Baby Joe is barely mentioned in the series, as if he is not actually part of the family; there are a mere handful of episodes dealing with how Cam and Mitch are -- gasp -- sad about the adoption rejection and how Lily uses the unfortunate situation to her advantage; and, finally, Haley is not actually good at college and ends up not staying (I won't ruin the details, as that's essentially the joke). Needless to say, the show maintains its comedy value, but furthering the plot has become a secondary, tertiary, maybe even quaternary objective for the showrunners and writers. We're dealing in stereotypes now. Possibly my least favourite (and the least funniest) of the four seasons so far.
