I've read all the books in this series, and always found the characters interesting and sympathetic. Good plotting, engaging historical background.

This series was highly recommended and I was further intrigued by the PBS TV series. The book was well written and evoked the late 19th and early 20th century as well as I've ever read but the subject matter didn't draw me in - I couldn't find any sympathy for the narrow-minded characters. I realize that it's my problem, not the author's, but I couldn't help wanting to slap everyone.
