“Penny Dreadful” takes place in 1890s London, England, and stars Sir Malcolm Murray and Vanessa Ives. Vanessa and Malcolm are searching for Malcolm’s missing daughter, Mina, who they believe to have been kidnapped by vampires. To help them, the duo enlists Ethan Chandler, an American sharpshooter. Along the way, the trio meets a multitude of odd and mysterious characters as they deal with supernatural forces in gritty, Victorian London.

“Penny Dreadful” falls into the horror and thriller genres. It’s a bizarre and unnerving show for sure, but is still very enjoyable. The characters are truly what drive “Penny Dreadful” and make it worthwhile and engaging. Each character is unique, and each one has their own flaws. In fact, characters arcs are what make up the bulk of the plot of this show (searching for Mina is almost like a side quest of sorts). The plot of this show is strange and interesting, and while it takes a while to truly get moving, once it does pick up, it will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The soundtrack for “Penny Dreadful” fits the show’s eerie nature, and the music sets the mood very well. Along with all of this, the actors and actresses dramatic abilities truly shine in “Penny Dreadful”. Each person has a chance to demonstrate their abilities, and no one holds back.

Overall, despite the show’s minor issues, the author of this review does recommend “Penny Dreadful”. It’s captivating yet unusual, and is fully worth the time spent watching. Audiences should be warned that “Penny Dreadful” contains trigger warnings for gore, nudity, demonic associations, and other horror – related themes. Due to the graphic subject matter of this show, the author of this review believes “Penny Dreadful” to be suitable for ages sixteen and up.
