I cannot agree with the negative reviews. Yes, the film is slow, but I liked the meticulous pacing. It gives you a good amount of time to get to know these women, who are slow to open up to one another. Blanchett and Mara give lovely performances. The whole thing felt like a Douglas Sirk romance like ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS.

Stylish production but very slow and boring. The movie was at least half over before something interesting happened, then it reverted right back to boring. I don't understand all the accolades for this film.

Film about two women, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, who have an affair. Set in the early 1950's, New York, but actually filmed in Cincinnati, Ohio, this film is a top notch production. Wonderful script, sets, cast, costumes, music and editing. Interesting to see how the idea of a woman being gay in the 1950's was dealt with. Really well done.

A wonderful, unconventional love story between two women. There is also the hidden layer of the ex husband and the custody battle for their child. What a beautiful movie and about love and life. I would highly recommend it.

A love story set around Christmas. This film is beautifully shot, with spot on costuming and cinematography. This love story, between the enchanting Carol and aspiring photographer Terese, is slow moving, but the pay off, and the consequences of the characters' love, are well worth the wait. I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

not what I expected, very boring

This is a period piece. The period is the dawn of the Eisenhower era in New York City (with a road trip, pre-Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956). I enjoyed it. But I am a sucker for any film that puts a lot of energy into historical atmosphere, has great costumes. It is a Patricia Highsmith story. So it is quality. Blanchett is magnificent. But Rooney Mara steals the show.

A common contribution to the film world of the LGBT community. Not very interesting. Not very well done.

Carol: What a strange girl you are.
Theres: Why?
Carol: Flung out of space.
(Exact same quote in the book as movie.)
===
Therese: I don't know what I want. How could I know what I want if I say yes to everything?
===
Carol: Happy New Year.
Thereset: Happy New Year.
Carol: Harge and I never spend New Year's Eve together. There's always a business function, always clients to entertain.
Therese: I've always spent it alone. In crowds. ... I'm not alone this year.
===
Carol: And do you live alone, Therese Belivet?
Therese: Well, there's Richard. He'd like to live with me. Oh no, it's nothing like that, I mean he'd like to marry me.
Carol: I see... And would you like to marry him?
Therese: Well, I barely even know what to order for lunch.
===
Carol: Now, there was a time... when I would have done almost anything, I would have locked myself away... to keep Rindy with me. But what use am I to her... to us, if I'm living against my own grain?
