Two children grow up alone with their authoritarian father on an isolated estate, speaking a language and inhabiting a surreal universe of their own creation that has been shaped by their reading of tales of chivalry and philosophy, until the death of their father brings them into contact with the outside world and reveals the dark truth of their existence. 15,000 first printing.

Perseus Publishing
Alone with their bullying father on a vast estate, a sister and brother speak a language and inhabit a universe of their own making. When the old man commits suicide, they are forced into contact with the villagers and their cloak of romance and superstition quickly falls away to reveal shocking truths. Balancing naiveté with carnality, Soucy employs his signature playfulness, plot twists, and fascination with guilt, cruelty, and violence in a narrative tour de force where nothing is quite what it seems.

I found this book to be disgusting and the writer must have a very sick mind. Out of 10 people in my bookclub, eight women couldn't even finish the book. They were thouroughly disgusted.

I've read this in the original as well, and the novel loses none of its impact in translation. An linguistic and imaginary tour-de-force: magical yet believable, true to life in a surreal kind of way, both appallingly beautiful and lovingly cruel.
