Award-winning author Juliet Marillier’s “lavishly detailed”(Publishers Weekly) Blackthorn & Grim series continues as a mysterious creature holds ancient Ireland in thrall...

Disillusioned healer Blackthorn and her companion, Grim, have settled in Dalriada to wait out the seven years of Blackthorn’s bond to her fey mentor, hoping to avoid any dire challenges. But trouble has a way of seeking them out.

A noblewoman asks for the prince of Dalriada’s help in expelling a creature who threatens the safety and sanity of all who live nearby from an old tower on her land—one surrounded by an impenetrable hedge of thorns. With no ready solutions to offer, the prince consults Blackthorn and Grim.

As Blackthorn and Grim put the pieces of this puzzle together, it’s apparent that a powerful adversary is working behind the scenes. Their quest soon becomes a life-and-death struggle—a conflict in which even the closest of friends can find themselves on opposite sides.

The PTSD flashbacks are harrowing, but told with compassion. There's also an interesting exploration of how someone becomes a villain, how they get to the point where the end justifies the means and other people are just tools to them. Which perhaps makes the story sound grimmer than it is. I would say that, for all its fantastical elements, it's a very human tale, with light, darkness, and many shades between.

A very capturing your mind book. I could not put it down until I read it until morning.

Having struck a bargain with a powerful fey nobleman, embittered healer Blackthorn and her ex-convict companion Grim must traverse the kingdom of Dalriada, aiding those in need. In Tower of Thorns, Lady Geiléis of Bann enlists them to lift a curse on her land, but the duo soon discovers that there's more to their assignment than their employer is letting on. Fans of lyrical, atmospheric fantasy based on Irish mythology will enjoy this the 2nd installment of the Blackthorn & Grim novels, after Dreamer's Pool.

He was the most beautiful young man Lily had seen in her whole life. All sixteen years of it.

This is how it is. Big fierce warrior with a weapon doesn’t scare me. What scares me is the things in my head. Things that come out of the blue. I can be walking along and suddenly it’s my worst day ever all over again and I’m seeing what I never wanted to see for the rest of my life.

The brew was all right. True love’s tears had a bitter aftertaste – appropriate, when you thought about it . . .

There’s an ache in my belly, and that ache is me wanting to understand not just the pictures but the words too. To be able to read. Magic, that’d be . . .
