In this explosive psychological thriller by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger, a young woman’s mysterious gift lands her in the middle of a dangerous investigation of a little girl’s disappearance.
For as long as she can remember, twenty-year-old Finley Montgomery has been able to see into the future: dream about things before they happen, see beyond the physical world, and unconsciously make supernatural things happen. But Finley can’t control these powers, and moves to The Hollows to live with her grandmother, a renowned seer who can help Finely understand and master her gifts. But once in The Hollows, Finley’s gift proves to be both a blessing and a curse.
Like Finley, Merri and Wolf Montgomery are in the worst possible hell. Their daughter Abbey has been missing for ten months. Leads exhausted, the police have all but given up hope; but Merri is unable to shake the feeling that time is running out, and makes a desperate, last ditch effort to locate her daughter.
Finley and Merri are on winding, treacherous paths towards the same point. When they finally come together in The Hollows, nothing is as it seems. But one thing is clear: The Hollows always gets what it wants.

Lisa Unger brings readers on a missing child case in Ink and Bone. Finley Montgomery has seen people that others cannot since she was a child. When another tattoo or the roar of her motorcycle can’t drown the voices any longer, Finley moves in with her famed psychic grandmother Eloise in The Hollows in upstate New York. She’s here to ostensibly attend college, but more importantly, to learn from her grandmother some skills to deal with her “gift.”
When private detective and friend Jones Cooper tries to bring his sometimes-partner Eloise in on a case, she calmly tells him that it is Finley’s case. Finley, who is just learning to hone her abilities, reluctantly agrees but desperately wants to help the family recover their missing daughter. Finley is uneasy with her psychic abilities, but soon learns that the messages that she receives from the dead cannot be ignored.
This atmospheric thriller uses fully realized characters to immerse readers into the story. Instead of the flatter characters typically found in suspense novels, the backstories, thoughts, and problems that best-selling author Lisa Unger creates for her characters help to craft a richer story. The novel is told in the third person and chapters are told from multiple character’s perspectives so that we have a more complex plot that moves forward with a quick pace. The dark setting of the small town of The Hollows in a wooded mining community sets a great tone for the unsettling story.
While the missing child plot may be unappealing to some readers, the focus of the story is on the characters and their growth. This is a standalone novel but characters have appeared in previous series for readers who want to explore them deeper. The supernatural elements of the novel are essential yet downplayed – the focus is on the investigation. This genre-bending novel is a great read if you like character development in your thrillers.
