This was a very thought provoking movie. Once you realize that the flashbacks are actually flashes into the future, you see the real story is not about the aliens but about the power of love. A very clever way to explore the power of love.

NO STARS! A Complete waste of Time!!! Reminded me of the God Awefull Contact movie! Why couldnt the diretor have the Aliens Kill everyone at the end? At least that would have been somewhat entertaining, instead of a 2 plus hour of a comunication leature!!!

You'll need to have a basic understanding of linguistic relativity, space and time, to enjoy it. Despite that, I still have trouble to understand how she got it (did she always have it? or was it "given" to her?). Very interesting movie, however, over rated. Actors are acting great.

Thoughtful and well-done approach on how we, as humans, would approach communications with other beings who literally and figuratively speak a different language. There is the traditional tug-of-war between science and the arts/humanities. In this case, the arts wins and Amy Adams does a good job in playing a hard-to-visualize role: the pressure of learning a new language unlike one ever seen before. I liked this film because rather than a knee-jerk "let's bomb 'em" action take, there is a slower approach and one of a measured belief in eventual communication success (with a wholly unexpected gift). Amy's backstory of loss is also well and quickly told.

Clearly aimed at the intelligence level of a 13-year-old - This "alien arrival" movie contains one of the corniest Romeo and Juliet stories that you are ever gonna see. Believe me - It's sickening.

With Arrival's $47 million budget - (I'd say that) - From a strictly visual perspective, neither is the alien spacecraft, nor are the aliens, themselves, at all interesting to look at.

My argument is this - If these aliens were so far advanced in their intelligence and technology, then, why was it so difficult for them to get their dire message across to the humans?

IMO - Arrival doesn't even come close to living up to all of the hype that was generated through its promotional campaign. This film is hardly worth getting excited about, at all.

An enjoyable sci-fi movie about how we would try to communicate with aliens if they all of a sudden show up on earth. Some of the science made me roll my eyes and the physicist seems to pretty much be only there to look concerned at the linguist but I liked it nonetheless.

Deeply complex and thoughtful sci-fi.

Boring. Most over rated movie of the year.

It's a good film, but often over-rated. I say over-rated because the movie (and the book may differ) relies on the absurd notion that learning the aliens language gives you insight into future events.

While it's true that language itself affects how we think, this movie relies on a preposterous notion- that aliens who don't grasp time as we do can teach us to see into the future- just by learning their language. It's laughable.

That all said, but for that one absurdity, it's otherwise a very good film.

Physicist Ian Donnelly says to linguist Louise Banks "You approach language like mathematics."

I have watched this film several times and I am still fascinated with the beauty of time and thought and language. Arrival addresses communication on both a visceral and an intellectual level. How we learn and how we teach are critical in our perception of the world and the way we communicate what we know. Arrival presents a view of this by contrasting how different people and different countries choose to communicate with the fascinating Heptapods. Louise immerses herself in the language and follows the knowledge that language gives her. The ending provides both action and reflection. I will be watching it again.

(I bought a copy so I can as often as I want.)

Memory is a strange thing. It doesn't work like I thought it did. We are so bound by time, by its order... I remember moments in the middle... And this was the end... But now I'm not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.

If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
