The description of this movie is intentionally misleading.
"Elle" is a violent rape-and-beating fantasy made by mentally ill degenerates.
A smart successful woman is raped at home & openly enjoys it (Not a spoiler, it's the opening scene).
There's 3-4 more rape scenes in the movie, each more violent & disturbing.
There's also animated tentacle rape scenes.
We learn that Elle is the daughter of a mass murderer & that every person in her life is a completely horrible piece of garbage. Awful men repeatedly sexually harass her, who of course she eagerly sleeps with. She sleeps with her best friend's husband. Her ex-husband beat her but they're still pals, & her low-IQ son threatens to beat her too. The only reason I kept watching was in hopes of seeing the whole cast die...But they don't die & nobody becomes better.

This all takes place in France, which in reality has been taken over by violent religious fanatics who form rape gangs & regularly attack women. Some of these real-life victims even express sympathy for their attackers, while police cover it all up. The movie obviously doesn't tackle any of this shocking truth & instead we get the feeling that Europeans are "guilty" & deserve the abuse. Was this movie made by the mainstream media?

It's unclear why moviemaking attracts so many horrible rapists & scumbags...Perhaps it's the best place for these monsters to not only hide, but flaunt their sickness & even reward each other for it.
On a side not, it's easy to guess how these "people" vote...They want censorship of criticism & total control over your life.

BIG SPOILER ALERT....
In the end the rape victim apologizes to the rapist's wife, & the rapist's wife thanks the rape victim for letting him rape her...Because he was just "troubled"! ...Seriously, I can't make this up. That's where we're at as a species.

Viewer beware. This film is debately X-rated for horror, psychological, sociological, as well as physical.

A real twisted movie. An eye-popper for all the wrong reasons.

A high spirited self-reliant woman refused to be a victim, not even consider herself victimized after a brutal assault! Reality is that most women who experienced rape did not report to the police, let alone the courage to avenge the crime (see "Quote".) But then, it is not just about crimes but tortured souls, especially hers.

" You’ve never seen a rape-revenge fantasy quite like “Elle,” not least because the rape, revenge and fantasy components of that subgenre have never been quite so fascinatingly disarranged. Knowingly incendiary but remarkably cool-headed, and built around yet another of Isabelle Huppert’s staggering psychological dissections, Paul Verhoeven’s long-awaited return to notional genre filmmaking pulls off a breathtaking bait-and-switch: Audiences arriving for a lurid slab of arthouse exploitation will be taken off-guard by the complex, compassionate, often corrosively funny examination of unconventional desires that awaits them. Every character in this movie must be on drugs. No one in real life behaves as they do. Get real!

This is a good, late career film by Paul Verhoeven and a knockout , hilarious performance by Isabelle Huppert- which is odd considering the disturbing material in the film.
It's a testament to Verhoeven's stellar abilities as a filmmaker that so many people are seriously upset by this film- it just proves he's done a great job.

A brilliant, relentless film about sexuality and power. In my all-time top 5.

This is not a funny film, in my opinion. There is explicit sexual scenes, where the person being raped, doesn't have any reason to go to the police! I cannot realize the same reaction that this woman has in this situation. The only reason might be because she is equally as ill as her perpetrator. Anyway, I do not recommend this film to anyone. No children should watch this. I do not know the point of this story.

She avoided the police for her own reasons:
You avoid the police because...
-Of course I avoid the police "because!" I won't deal with the police ever again.
===
The police, never again. It's pointless.
-This is different. You're the victim.
I was the victim then!
===
Time has dulled the terror of that distant day in May. But for some the horror will never fade away. Nor will the unanswered questions.
===
How much do you need for the apartment?
-I didn't ask for money.
No, it was me, hearing voices.
===
I felt ashamed beyond words.
-Shame isn't a strong enough emotion to stop us doing anything at all.
Believe me.
===
Your jealousy is insane.
-No, I'm just concerned. I'm concerned because this is what I feared. The bimbos with big tits never worried me, but a woman who's read: "The Second Sex" will chew you up... And spit you out.

That girl is clearly dysfunctional. You know nothing about her. Except she was raised in a commune by unwashed idiots.
- An arts collective.
===
You're so selfish, it's frightening.
-I know. By the way, here's your check.
You never give anything truly of yourself. Your father, it's such an ordeal?
- Don't.
He's old.
- Still breathing.
Some bonds never break.
-I walk in and it's one horror after another.
===
Don't expect me to pitch in. I'm stone broke.
-I'm the one who made the promise.
Why? Struggling to get by builds character.
-Trouble is, he's dating a psycho. ... The wacko won't tolerate struggling.
Psycho's the word. Often though, that kind of girl's good in bed.
-What does that even mean, "good in bed"? I never knew.
===
What did you see in him?
- It was just one of those things. An opportunity. I wanted to get laid.
That's no excuse. It was shabby.
-Worse than that even.

He was my neighbor.
-Like have-a-cup-of-coffee neighbor?
Borrow-the-lawnmower neighbor?
-No, I never borrowed his lawnmower.
But it was...
-Yes, that kind of neighbor.
===
I'm very sorry for all you've been through. Fortunately, I have faith.
-What's it for if not to get through tough times?
Patrick was a good man but he had a tortured soul.
===
What happened?
-Laying in bed, I asked her which of my books was her favorite.
Why'd you do that?
-She said Scent of Poplar. Scent of Poplar is a novel by one Pierre Casamayou.
I'd no idea there were two Casamayous.
-Apparently, he's talented.
===
What happened?
-I don't know.
So think about it. There must be a reason, however demented.
-There's a reason. I lost my job.
Lost?
-I resigned.
You resigned?
-l had to. My car broke down.
You resigned because your car broke down?
-It's one hour there, one hour back, from the house. That's unhealthy. I saw a thing on TV about air quality in the subway.
