Commissario Brunetti's involved in the case of a young Romany girl who drowned in a Venice canal. He suspects she fell from a roof while robbing an apt. Still, it falls to him to inform her parents, who live in a Rom camp on the mainland. Hostile, they claim she's at home, but can't produce her. The father won't look at photos Brunetti has. Still, the mother's distraught with grief when she sees the snapshots, so he knows the child is theirs. He's threatened into leaving. When he returns, the entire camp is gone. The girl haunts his dreams, especially how different her life was, and always would have been, from his daughter's life. One of the best in this outstanding series.

A delight to read as always with Donna Leon's Brunetti series. Charming characters and gentle investigations of moral dilemmas and paradoxes while Guido battles with the all-pervasive corruption in Italian society in his solving of crime in Venice.
