Another amazing tale from Lisa Jewell! This doesn't disappoint - it messes with your head, strong characterization and a great simple to follow plot with lots of twists and turns. Had me guessing until the very final pages.

An intriguing novel interwoven with dark and mysterious pasts of the characters.

Imagine living in a beautiful house in Chelsea with your family then strangers start moving in, taking over, and imposing drastic rules. Next thing you know, your family has nothing and a man you don't know controls your life. Fast forward to present day where a woman, her two children and dog are living on the streets of Nice, France playing the fiddle for food. Back in London, Libby has turned 25 and inherited the house on Cheyne Walk, Chelsea worth millions of pounds. These three alternating voices and time periods are the only way to tell this story. Putting the pieces together will leave you breathless until the very end. The characters are richly drawn and flawed. Lisa Jewell has a gift for twisty, dark, fantastic stories.

This was one of the best books I read this year. I really enjoyed the author's writing style that kept you in suspense to the very end. I highly recommend this novel.

Amazing characters and amazing story line. Kept me engaged and wanting more - couldn't put it down.

Similar to 'Then She Was Gone' in that it was somewhat predictable and the ending felt rushed.

EXCELLENT STORY! Many twists and turns in this sad story of child abuse and the results of on the children in their adulthood! the characters are well written, you feel sympathy for their struggle but also understand why they do what they do. Its also a great read, filled with hope. Many twists and turns, many surprising! A great read from Jewel!

A decent psychological thriller. Some of the twists were pretty easy to predict, but the insane family drama was interesting. The characters' behavior is mostly illogical, but I suppose children and cult members aren't the most logical creatures. I hated that the book was written in the present tense. Since 99% of books are written in the past tense, it just felt awkward and wrong.

MEDIOCRE book propped up by a big (?) marketing campaign. Sorry, but "The Family Upstairs" is absolutely undeserving of glowing reviews. There's too many of them online, which makes me wonder if they are fake (paid for). It's the WORST crime book I've read so far this year (2019). The plot is totally bland and implausible and I cannot imagine how anyone who purports to be intelligent can say anything good about this train wreck of a book. There is so much silliness in it, it's infuriating. And as far as I am concerned, there were no big, exciting twists either. Head over to Amazon UK, and check out the 1 and 2 star reviews. They are all spot on! This was my first time reading Lisa Jewell, a British author. No more books from her for me. If you want to read a truly spine-chilling, dark, menacing book about a cult with a mind-blowing conclusion, check out The Nowhere Child by Christian White instead.
