"Nothing Ventured heralds the start of a brand new series in the style of Jeffrey Archer's #1 New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles: introducing Detective William Warwick. But this is not a detective story, this is a story about the making of a detective . . . William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father's dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister Grace, he will join London's Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard's arts and antiquities squad. Investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting from the Fitzmolean Museum, he meets Beth Rainsford, a research assistant at the gallery who he falls hopelessly in love with, even as Beth guards a secret of her own that she's terrified will come to light. While William follows the trail of the missing masterpiece, he comes up against suave art collector Miles Faulkner and his brilliant lawyer, Booth Watson QC, who are willing to bend the law to breaking point to stay one step ahead of William. Meanwhile, Miles Faulkner's wife, Christina, befriends William, but whose side is she really on? This new series introduces William Warwick, a family man and a detective who will battle throughout his career against a powerful criminal nemesis. Through twists, triumph and tragedy, this series will show that William Warwick is destined to become one of Jeffrey Archer's most enduring legacies"-- Provided by publisher.

4**** - really enjoyed this one. Another great Archer novel. Neat plot, as well as interesting characters. Will look forward to reading the next one. !!

When first opening this book, readers are greeted with this quote: “This is not a detective story, this is a story about a detective.” This tells us that this book is about the main character and not necessarily the cases he faces. Nothing Ventured starts off very strong by introducing a promising setting with well-rounded characters and a nice kick off with character development. However, as the book continues it starts to lack as a so called “story about a detective”. Character development no longer ensues and there are very badly paced scenes, some of which go aggravatingly slowly, and others which just slam information into the reader’s face without much build up. By the end of the novel, almost none of the characters seem real and past ideas are seemingly thrown away as if the book’s ending was rushed and the author just wanted to finish it. One of the things I disliked most about this book was the ending. I think Nothing Ventured is quite bad if my reaction to its final sentence was “Oh come on”. Overall, this book started out promising, but the author quickly brought it downhill. 1.5/5 stars. @Basilisk_0 of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board.

AAARG (difficult to read) Too many London street names and places. A strange writing style.

I looked forward to every one of 'The Clifton Chronicles' books. Considering there are 7 books in the series that came out over a 6 year period, and considering I read my first Archer book in 1994, I have to label myself an ardent devotee of the author. Prior to Archer, I hated the writing of British authors and tended to steer clear of short stories (until, hello, 'Twelve Red Herrings').

Some of the reviews I've read of 'Nothing Ventured' seem to be disappointed in it. I think it's actually brilliant that Archer is writing a series around a fictional character (William Warwick) to whom we were introduced AS a fictional character written BY a fictional character (Harry Clifton) in 'The Clifton Chronicles'! We really knew nothing about William Warwick except that he was a character Harry wrote and loved, and that he sometimes struggled with his stories.

'Nothing Ventured' introduces us to William, those around him, and how he began to work toward his ambitions. I expect that as the series continues, we'll find out how he solved the crimes he did in the books Harry wrote about him. . . . And, of course, the last line on the book indicates we will.

I read somewhere that someone read that Archer hopes to live long enough to finish the series. I hope we both do! Stay healthy and write faster Jeffrey!

4.5 Stars

I was a little disappointed in this new series with William Warwick. As with most books I read I sometimes have to shift gears with the authors writing styles and the beginning of this book was dry and a boring. Hopefully the next book will find its way because I really enjoyed the Clifton Chronicals.

William Warwick is a fictitious character in Jeffrey Archer's Clifton Chronicle series. Now he has his own series. In the first book of the series, Warwick becomes a cop and is on the route to becoming a detective at Scotland Yard. He helps in solving an art theft, and in the process, falls in love with a museum curator, Beth. Beth has her own secret and it is up to William and his father, a criminal lawyer to help her in this secret too. All in all a page turner that will keep you engrossed from start to finish.
