Spies in Disguise
DVD - 2020 | Multi-screen edition
Super spy Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave, and debonair. Walter is not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise, transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril.

I might come across as unfavourable but I was truly impressed by the animation. This title had next-level CG rendering and motion in the gas, clouds, waves, and most impressively the lighting. My jaw dropped at things like police car blinkies and nighttime action, and subtle changes in daylight environments like reflected surfaces. I look for two routine things in animation, both prominent and excellent here; camera perspectives and motion that can’t be accomplished with live action. Otherwise, why use animation to present the story? The sets and backgrounds were also dripping with detail the real world can’t deliver.
This was delivered with tempered necessities like actions not words, only a hint of adult jokes, and a politely restrained Will Smith along with other voices, so it didn’t come across as an ego vehicle. Actor face time was well distributed but as another commenter noted, if you don't like Will Smith it would be hard to like this movie. I loved the mix of real accents and was impressed by Japanese bad guys actually voiced and scripted in Japanese without mockery. One oddity was Ben Mendelsohn's Killian/Robohand, an Aussie actor known for applying accents. He sounded like he was channeling Javier Bardem directly from Skyfall, which I suspect was Javier performing a slightly suppressed natural Spanish. Thankfully, nothing spoken was difficult to understand, but any meaning from Killian's speech was lost to me.
For the kids, a basic moral on teamwork, non-violence, and resilience against bullying, and for adults, an amazing visual showcase.
One thing that irked me was the Bond action intro, trippy Bond credits, and plot copied directly from a Bond film. The super-science nerd kid was also well worn. The intellectual in me sighs “oh come on, try harder,” but, in the end, it didn’t subtract much from a good experience. If you’re going to make a spy movie filled with familiar tropes, themes, characters, and settings, you might as well copy the best. Another bit of white noise was the Blue Sky Studios universe blending together, even somewhat undistinguished from Sony Animation if they’re not familiars. At times, it felt like I was watching Rio or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, blenderizing art direction and character design, but the ultrarealism of SiD modelling was unique and stood apart.
PS: the title is a witty homophone, if I’m using that word correctly.
This 1hr 42min animation DVD movie is 85percent, WILL SMITH.

Unless you enjoy listening to WILL SMITH talking, as a SUPER SPY LANCE STERLING, in SPIES IN DISGUISE; I got "BORED" "SUPER EARLY" in this movie.
It was not until the later portion that TOM HOLLAND had any part included. At least someone else had to solve the problem, against the Bad Guy.

[In my Opinion], just because it was always "Will Smith in every scene", 2 1/2-STAR-RATING.
Super fun movie! Worth watching!
Not bad and not good animation. A little bit funny though weird. Kinda dumb.
A really funny, cute movie
Fun and funny. An action comedy adventure for the whole family.
This movie didn't look like it'd be that great, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was a bit funnier than I thought, and the villain was actually well thought-out (well enough that I'd say it was almost a teen or DC comic adult-level back story that could be translated to those audiences later). This helped narrate a non-violence leaning message--which was laced with some corny humour. Overall it was...alright, not highly special or unique in feel like Shrek or a normal Disney animated/Disney-Pixar, but clever and at times intelligent, and the script was pretty robust--younger audiences will enjoy the slapstick of the bodily function humour, which to me wasn't always very humourous. With a b-movie title, it lands a bit above a good popcorn movie, and for the 6-11 audience, probably repeatable. The cast did a stellar job (it was fun hearing Karen Gillan in her native Scottish as a goofy side character, for instance--same with DJ Khaled), especially Will Smith, Tom Holland, and Ben Mendelsohn.
This movie was surprisingly funny and great for both adults and kids! My favorite part was definitely the pigeon humor.
Will Smith is really good at playing himself in movies. Some of the plot points are dumb and super forced, but I can see young kids enjoying this film. It just wasn't for me, but then again, I'm not the target audience.
I thought the movie was really good i think its good for all ages.
