Sketches an argument for the political centrality of the paradox of liberal democracy, contending that a recognition of its centrality is a prerequisite to any decent account of democratic theory. Summarizes major democratic theorists currently writing and shows the inadequacy of their work in relation to resolving the paradox. Posits that the liberal-democratic ideal is prone to self-destruction, and that more democracy may worsen this propensity to self-destruction. Watson teaches political science and is fellow in politics and policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Education, Saint Vincent College. Annotation c.
