Fantastic novel associated with the story of the Dark and Bloody ground -- a.k.a. Kentucky -- which follows the Revolutionary War campaign of G.R. Clark and the abortive, halfhearted campaign of Clark and Wilkinson to detach KY and TN from the US for the Spanish Empire in protest of the Jay-Gardoqui treaty of 1786, which was never ratified. This book has been corrected and updated in Project Gutenberg, see pg388.
