Shape (1867-1960) was from a prosperous Wisconsin brewing family and had travelled and studied in Europe. He left his wife and children in New York to search for gold in Alaska, 1897-98, and left the rest of us an articulate and detailed account of his adventures, complete with photographs. You will feel that you're part of this expedition as they trudge up and down with many loads of heavy gear. The politically incorrect observations of this well-educated, well-traveled journalist add spice and include unbelievable detail and many pictures taken along the way. An adventure most will be glad to enjoy from the comfort of an easy chair.
