Like many others, around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned 30, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. Although she had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want, including a husband, a home, and a successful career, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. This is an account of her pursuit of worldly pleasure, spiritual devotion, and what she really wanted out of life.

“Eat, Pray, Love?” I remember that. It’s by the woman who found her husband, then wrote a best-selling book about commitment, then dumped him when she self-discovered she was a lesbian and wrote a best-seller about that. I’d rather take spiritual advice from a fortune cookie. It does serve as a bad example.

An exploration through the mind, body and spirit. Well being taught through the words of Elizabeth Gilbert filled me with wonder, excitement and an urgency to explore my own thoughts and reactions. She also painted her experiences abroad so vividly I felt as if I were there with her, exploring the streets of Rome while cleaning a bathroom, meditating in an ashram in India while driving to a friends house, or listening to the old medicine man give me wisdom while typing a report. It was all so enchanting and revealing, I want to read it again and again!

What a glorious audio book... loved "reading" the book, too...but hearing it read by the author who has such a pleasant voice is a wonderful experience itself!

Overall it is a good book. However, there were times that I really spaced out while reading it and didn't realize what was going on because it moved so slowly.

Yeah. It's ok.
I don't really 'get' its extreme success outside of the USA.
I do understand that it is a person's search for self and that necessarily means that it is very self absorbed/obsessed/interested so those aspects don't grate as badly for me.
I loved the time in Italy. I do think that is the strongest part of the book so don't worry if you give up 1/3rd of the way through.
With a sufi grandmother I found the bits in India fascinating and evocative. I can understand that someone without a personal interest might find this bit tedious but it was a quiet reminder to me that I do want to visit the place in QLD where her ashes lie.

I'm not even vaguely interested in her followup book.

AVOID. I found the author selfish and self-absorbed to the point of being extremely unlikeable. I couldn't relate to her at all (I wanted to yell at her "oh for god's sake millions of people are starving and below the poverty line, get over yourself!") and by the time she got to India let alone Indonesia I didn't care what happened to her at all. This was one of the very few books I wanted to throw across the room in annoyance.

at first this chic's brand of crazy annoyed me ... then I realized it's MY brand. Embarrassing? yes. Entertaining? for sure. but don't think this lady's got it all figured out, you'll want to cherry pick through all her advice.

"To find the balance you want," Ketut spoke through his translator, "this is what you must become. You must keep your feet grounded so firmly that it's like you have four legs instead of two....But you must stop looking at the world through your head. You must look through your heart..," (34)
