Following the Sioux War of 1876, thousands of Northern Cheyenne Indians surrendered to the federal government and all but a few were moved from their homes to a reservation in present-day Oklahoma. The settlement created by the few who stayed sparked years of conflict and bloodshed between the Northern Cheyenne and territorial ranchers and townspeople. This work chronicles the formation of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation from its origins to its final resolution in 1900, addressing issues such as the permanence of executive-order reservations compared to treaty reservations, and tribal economic development involving water and mineral rights. Includes b&w maps. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
