Epic story of the long road home from war. This is the story of a different breed of warrior. This man valued less the blind courage of previous heroes. He was a trickster and a tactician. His craftiness however, endowed him with the sin of hubris. For this he was delayed in his return from the Trojan War and set adrift on a second adventure. These journeys would take him to hell and back, encounter monsters and lay in the arms of immortal women. This is an early story of a new kind of man, a thinking man, a flawed man, a loving man. In this way he is a modern man. The story is also emblematic of the transition one must face, boyhood to manhood, duty, temptation, true love, humility, to fatherhood and old age. This book existed in the oral tradition long before it was written. I continue to find value in it every time I read it. As I grow as a person, I am able to relate to different parts. In this way for me, the story is timeless.
