This is an excellent example of advocacy journalism (or muckraking) for its time and place--about the same as Sinclair's most famous work "The Jungle". This time he is after the religious institutions and the new religions of his time, to show both how they support the oppression of the workers and the poor, and how they profit tidily from their racket.
