“One of those books that publishers like to say ‘transcends the genre,’ but in this case it’s true.”

Every Secret Thing is a riveting story of love and murder, guilt and innocence, adult sins and childhood darkness that the New York Times Book Review hailed as, “powerful…disturbing.” Stepping away from her acclaimed, award-winning mystery series featuring Baltimore private investigator Tess Monaghan, author Laura Lippman has delivered a novel of psychological suspense that will shock and mesmerize readers, gripping them to the page while breaking their hearts. The tale of a terrible event that devastates three families, after two young girls discover by of an unsupervised baby on an empty street, Every Secret Thing is a bravura demonstration of the extraordinary storytelling skill that has won Laura Lippman every major literary prize bestowed upon mystery writers, including the Edgar®, the Anthony, the Shamus, and the Agatha Awards.

Two kidnapped babies, two girls released from prison. Who is telling the truth?

This was a great read. The characters were quite believable. The ending was a bit shocking but seemed to be the only reasonable conclusion. Laua Lippman is a definite addition to my list of favorite authors.

This was a great read. I was lucky enough to find several hours in a row during which I read three-quarters of the book in one setting. Later that night I was watching the news and wondered why there was no mention of the missing baby, only to remind myself that the missing baby was really a fictional baby from this novel. That's the mark of a great read. This isn't great literature, but it's suspenseful; the characters are well thought out, and the plot is believable. This was my first Lippman novel, but I'll be looking for others.

As each person's secret comes unraveled, it discloses how they all depend on one another to protect themselves and to keep the surface of the mystery unruffled and closed.
