When young siblings Beverley and Felix come to stay with their aunt, uncle and cousins on beautiful but remote Prince Edward Island, they aren't sure what to expect. Soon, the newly acquainted cousins become fast friends and begin to fill their free time with bouts of fantastical storytelling. A girl named Sara displays a unique genius for this activity and soon becomes the fabled Story Girl whom all the others in the group depend on for a steady supply of ripping good yarns. The Story Girl is a rewarding read that you'll come back to again and again.

Fourteen-year-old Sara Stanley (called the Story Girl) comes to Carlisle, Prince Edward Island, and along with her cousins and friends, creates a hilarious, fun-packed, colorful, beautiful, sweet summer. The Story Girl is "not beautiful" but "fascinating." and has a "clear, sweet, far-reaching, bell-like" voice that has the ability to entrance listeners, bring out emotions and tones, and create visual images of that story for the little group. "If voices had color, hers would have been like a rainbow. It made words live. Whatever she said became a breathing entity, not a mere verbal statement or utterance." Along with the observant, kindhearted Beverley, fat and sensitive Felix, lazy and frank Dan, pretty and conceited Felicity, mild and sweet Cecily, funny and "hired boy" Peter, these lovable, funny youngsters have all these crazy adventures and hilarious events and sweet surprises through the wonderful summer. "And before us was the dream of spring. It is always safe to dream of spring. For it is sure to come; and if it be not just as we have pictured it, it will be infinitely sweeter."
