Add a CommentDirected and choreographed by Rob Marshall in 2002 based on the stage-musical of the same name, this American musical crime dramedy seems to explore the themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Chicago during the Jazz Age.
A supposedly rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical turns out to be a mangled dramedy so lacking in substance, if not a total flop.
What a pity with so many talented actors performing to a badly crafted script!
I like classic musicals, but this one missed the target for me. Perhaps better with a different cast.
GREAT 2002 musical romance plus film. Excellent acting by various performers - and terrific contemporary film making/choreography, etc. This rates way up there in the genre; glad to see it continue to evolve.
Sensational! Didn't even know Richard Gere could sing. Or Zeta-Jones. Zellweger is sensational!
I'm not usually a fan of musicals, but this one was great! Wonderful songs and fantastic choreography.
Wonderfully entertaining.
The movie is great! Catherine Zeta Jones and Richard Gere's acting are amazing and the songs stayed in my head for a while after I watched it. Renee Zellweger could have acted better though, but overall I enjoyed the rest of the movie. :)
I was going to call this one of the worst movies to win best picture, but then I remembered that "Forest Gump," "Dances with Wolves" and "Crash" have won too. I guess it's fun if you like musicals?
Zellweger was horribly miscast, but Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah make up for it with wonderful performances. Not my favorite movie musical, but it's entertaining.
A nice musical movie.
