After twelve-year-old Annika, a foundling living in late nineteenth-century Vienna, inherits a trunk of costume jewelry, a woman claiming to be her aristocratic mother arrives and takes her to live in a strangely decrepit mansion in Germany.

Annika never has a birthday - no one knows the date she was born. Her mother, after years of guilt and searching, has come to claim her. Annika is no servant but a Prussian aristocrat whose true home is a great castle. But at crumbling, spooky Spittal, she discovers that all is not as it seems in the lives of her new-found family.

A wonderful, colorful story. I highly recommend this for young readers, although adults will love it, as well.

Loved this children's novel. A lovely story full of beautiful caring characters. Good over evil. Will check out other books by Eva Ibbotson.

I enjoyed this book so much, and Eva Ibbotson is one of my favourite authors. Her stories are whimsical and fun, yet with plot lines that go deeper than you'd think. This book shows you life in Vienna and how it changes so easily. I loved this book!

This book painted a beautiful picture of life in Vienna in 1908. It was enjoyable, fun and easy to read. I loved the story of Annika and her adopted family. This book kept me up late reading.

This is my favorite of the juvenile books by Ibbotson. She tends to have similar characters from one book to the next. However, this book deserves the awards it has won.

This was my favorite book of the year when I read it with my boys. Actually we listened to it and loved every minute. Kazan has something for everyone... A lovely heroine with a sprinkling of tragedy, a mysterious dashing young man, a suspect mother, annoying and snooty neighbors, amazing horses & jewels, and a diabolical boarding school. Ibbotson is a master of
story weaving.
