The best thing you can say about this 2005 movie is that it's exactly what you think it will be. Adapted from the animated show that appeared on MTV's "Liquid Television." Charlize Theron plays the titular assassin and, well, that's about all that makes sense. It's set in the future, there are genetic shenanigans, some kind of rebellion, one character has hands for feet, and Frances Mcdormand has ridiculous hair. Maybe the most surprising thing about this is that the director, Karyn Kusama, is a woman and began her career with the indie boxing movie "Girlfight." I imagine fans of "Resident Evil" and "Underworld" will like this.

A toned down PG-13/R version of the edgy MTV animation series. The sci-fi on utopia/dystopian and cloning were controversial in 2006 as a decade later today. Nice location sets and super stylish visual effects. In the center of it all, was a love story and the idea of soul that lasted over time.

Charlize Theron as the new Jane Fonda [in Barbarella]!
Only even Theron in skin-tights doesn't make up a conventional plot, or the complete omission of Barbarella's surrealistic playfulness.
Wish they had had the nerve to go for complete satire/camp, maybe something like "What's Up Tiger Lily" by Woody Allen, [with nonsense dialogue]. Why? This is a purely visual movie, even aside from the admittedly lovely Ms. Theron. It's a 92 minute long fashion runway/catwalk. All about style and sex appeal.
It's all Hollywooden: plot, dialogue and characters are just furniture here.
The original was a quirky and edgy animated series, turned into sausage by americans. [Interesting parallel here: the original French 1990 La Femme Nikita vs. the flat-footed 1993 Hollywood version.] It could easily be released as a silent film, or with 80's techno keyboards music. Deaf viewers rejoice: you aren't missing a thing [raid the fridge, dip in and out, this is a non-linear experience!].

I loved the animated series that was once on MTV many years ago. I always thought it was so strange and yet so cool that this agent or warrior, who often fought strange and unusual characters, would die at the end of every episode. Hmmm. That's different. I was blown away when i saw a preview of the movie starring Charlize Theron. Would she move or fight like the animated character? After watching the DVD i must say i did enjoy it. I like the characters, action, visuals, and audio that sound good on my HOMETHEATER. There's are plenty of weapons and devices used in this movie to quinch my thirst. I also liked the way she looked as the agent,warrior,spy, Aeon Flux. One of my favorite scene for visuals is when Aeon is locked in a room and began to whistle. Those small metal pieces she threw on the ground in an earlier scene are now activated and turn into ball bearings rolling towards the room she's now a prisoner of. I love the way her whistle sound in my speakers and the sounds of the bearings rolling through the building and pass people. I also enjoyed the body guard (Freya) to Trevor Goodchild. Her weapon was very cool. There is also another scene i really enjoyed where Aeon & Sithandra duck and dodge strange weapons firing metal pins at them as they leave the city. But there are many scenes that have good sound and visuals for your enjoyment. I'm giving this movie 4 stars. A good effort in recreating the animated series, cool looking characters, very nice weapons, and i liked the way Charlize looked as Aeon Flux. A thick veal parmesan hero, popcorn, and a large coke with ice.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”.

Opening dialogue:
Some call Bregna the perfect society. Some call it the height of human civilization. But others know better. The Goodchilds built Bregna to ensure us a future. They built the Relical... a memorial to remind us of what we've survived. They built walls to protect us. They tell us that outside, nature has retaken the world. But the real problems lie within. We are haunted by sorrows we cannot name. People disappear... and our government denies these crimes. The Goodchild regime provides for us, as long as we stay quiet. So we trade freedom for a gilded cage. But there are rebels who refuse to make that trade... who fight to overthrow a government
that silences us... who fight in the name of the disappeared. They call themselves the Monicans. I am one of them.

Now we can move forward ... to live once for real ... and then give way to people who might do it better. ... To live only once ... but with hope.
===
Whatever we are, we're not anarchists. There have to be rules.
===
This world, our world, is beautiful. Worth preserving at any cost.
-It can't last. It's falling apart. ...
We've beaten death, beaten nature. We've gone beyond you. And now I need to be free of you.
===
The cloning is all we have.
-It's not enough. Our minds are unraveling, and every time you bring us back it gets worse.
If you do this, we end.
-We're meant to die. It's what makes anything about us matter. Living like this is torture. We're just ghosts.
