This is NOT a comedy unless you think laughing at people with problems they cannot deal with is funny. What makes this watchable is the (albeit at times overdone) depiction of how oblivious self-centeredness can undermine a relationship. In short, an object lesson. Both the primary and alternative endings are probable outcomes.

Average comedy with unlikeable characters.

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston become bitter roommates after they break-up and neither is willing to move out of their expensive shared condo. I did find this movie kind of sweet and honest in some ways since it reveals the messy and darker sides of being in a relationship and in love. What I didn’t like about this movie though is how the supporting characters didn’t really seem to have much of an influence on the plot and the chemistry between the two leads - supposedly former lovers - just wasn’t there. I would rate this movie a generous 3/5 stars.

Average movie I thought it would be better with both these big stars! kind of a slow movie at times!!

No real laughs to be had here, though a fine, if middle-brow, depiction of the meltdown of a relationship. Vince Vaughn has perfected that aging, white, slightly malevolent frat boy American man character. The realism of the ending redeems the movie from the dustbin of romantic comedies.

“The Break Up”- 3.75 It advertises this as comical. It seemed just enough humor to allow me to continue through some difficult realistic break-down interactions. I liked it, it gave me urge to self-appraise. A couple with a romantic and loving beginning, moved on to a place where there is worn down sensitivity. They know the areas of worst aggravation toward each other and until the critical level, they have stopped listening with sensitivity. They get along and get together when it is convenient. Yes, selfish blundering best describes the male, but if you watch also consider the female's plots of manipulation. It is a relationship requiring a new inspiriting and a renewed commitment to attend to the other. Not a comedy; no resolutions, but worth the time if you wonder “how did we get to this point?” or have a certainty that it is all “their” fault”.

This movie is really well done. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston are both really good in this movie. Good for a girl's night or date night.

This movie is difficult to watch because I know just how I would save this relationship. I know just what I would say and just what I would do and it would be so easy! These people are saying all the wrong things and it's amazing to me that she still wanted him back, even after he'd hurt her repeatedly. He still could have saved this, even at the end! It was infuriating.
