It is 1945 and Anne Shirley (Hershey), now a successful, middle-aged writer, has returned to Prince Edward Island. A long lost letter from her errant father, discovered under the floorboards in Green Gables, causes Anne to delve into long-buried memories. While writing a play, she relives the troubled years after her mother died and before she arrived as an orphan at the Green Gables farm. She confronts the fact that she made up stories about her childhood. During that time, Young Anne (Endicott-Douglas), is taken into the care of a wealthy matriarch, Amelia Thomas (MacLaine) and her daughter-in-law, Louisa (Blancard), which changes her life forever.

& Taylor

Anne is now a writer, struggling to put together a play which requires her to look deeply into her years before coming to Green Gables as an orphan.

Where is Closed Captioned or English subtitles?????????????? It's supposed to be install English subtitles! it's after year 2000 and it's agaist the America's and Canada's law. They are required to have CC or SDH (subtitle for deaf and hard of hearing). It's called prejuiced. DO NOT accept any movies that without SDH or C.C.

Overly melodramatic and far too long. The main character was an odd blend of Little Professor (pedantic at times) and Pollyanna. Hard to see the relation to original Anne of Green Gables.

I am very insulted as a Canadian who loves Anne. I've been reading the series since about the age of 13 a very long time ago and continue to read it every couple of years. I do have the whole series.
I wish I was able to read the comments first. Never, ever would have brought this garbage home. I am very happy to say never saw the book and it will never be part of my library.

I'd like to point out that Anne's father 'abandoned' her in the 'died-from-typhoid-fever' sense; not the modern 'I-need-concentrate-on-my-career-slash-personal-development' sense.

Loved This Movie. Great Acting and great story. Especially loved Barbara Hershey.

I loved Kevin Sullivan's first two Anne movies, but this latest film feels like a tacky way to make money off the Anne name without paying for the use of LM Montgomery's writings.

This movie, written by Kevin Sullivan, is supposed to be both a prequel and a sequel to the Anne story. An older Anne, played by Barbara Hershey, flashes back to her childhood before she came to Green Gables.

The made-up story of the younger Anne is insulting to Anne fans, as it rewrites her history and makes her seem like a pathological liar. The plot is ridiculously convoluted, and tries to copy the original movies by getting Anne into similar scrapes which don't work without the heart behind the story.

Although the movie is beautifully filmed as are all his productions, Kevin Sullivan seems to have forgotten that his original movies were successful because the films captured the spirit of the books. Having big names like Shirley MacLaine mean nothing when the core of the story is hollow.

Kevin made his name with productions like Anne of Green Gables, and we saw him stray with the third movie in his interpretation of the Anne Series. With the addition of this atrocity the true colours of his bottoming out is apparent. I feel bad for the talent that used their gifts to attempt to do their best for this series, but there was nothing that could be done for the script. It was such a divergance from the original heart of the storyline that it is downright insulting to Lucy Mauds family. I honestly have no idea why they would have signed off on this film using their ancestors name. I could not get through this this movie without being devistated and horrified by what passes as another
Anne Movie. I will say it, I have lost faith in Sullivan and hope he spreads his wings a little and finds a new Canadian classic to bring forward so generations can enjoy not further slaughter classics.

A huge insult to all of us who love L.M. Montgomery and her works. To use an existing title is legal, but in this case completely immoral, as the names of characters have also been used, but the story line has nothing to do with the real Anne.

I'm would have said that I was against book(or DVD)-burning, but would be the first to throw this lot on a large fire.

I hope no young people seethis and then think they have become acquainted with the Anne who is such a famous part of Canadian literature.

I was very sorry to see this offered at my local library.

To add injury to insult, so to speak, the characters are extremely 'out of character' for the times depicted and the language is not appropriate, either.

I truly hated this book and am hard put to think of another title that affected me so negatively.

Two of the real Anne's sons were in WWI, where one died. Anne was home raising her family and Gilbert was a country doctor. He did not go overseas, nor did Anne become an Army nurse and follow him, then adopt an orphan boy found on the battlefield.

A complete and utter waste of time, this should never be included on a list entitled "Great Canadian Works for Children" (I may have the exact name of the list wrong, but was so angry at seeing this listed, I went immediately to add my comment).

I have lodged a complaint at my home library and have warned everyone I speak to about books and movies. I will continue to do so.

I didn't like it too mainly because of "enormous stray from Lucy Maud Montgomery's story".
