This 1967 movie, based on the 1965 John Ball novel, the first of a series of novels with Virgil Tibbs, an African-American detective, this one where Tibbs is visiting in the South and meets racism head on. The appearance of this movie made one think that perhaps America was beginning to face its history and culture of racial discrimination. Besides being such an important step in American history, it also was a great detective movie with two fine lead actors, Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier. It won 5 Oscars, most notably for best movie and for best actor, Rod Steiger. The movie also won 3 Golden Globes, one for best movie, one for the writing, and one best Actor, Rod Steiger. Sydney Poitier was nominated for best actor. There were great hopes at the time that America was going to solve its racism problem, but once Obama was elected president, we saw that there was still great hostility to the idea of racial equality in America (especially in southern and mid-western states).
