It’s hard to say that this story wasn't interesting, a lot happens and we get a few plot twists. Firstly the way Mare handles the situation was aggravating. Cal didn’t handle the situation any better but for some reason, I just couldn’t stand how those two were dealing with it, especially Mare. I started to dislike Mare in this book because it felt as if she was complaining about her life way too much, but I can say that her character really developed in the last book and so did all the others. Mare, Cal, and Evangeline all had to make tough decisions, it may not have been what the readers wanted at first but it did result in a positive resolution. I really wanted to see how things would play out between Mare, Cal, and Maven because they've been the trio since the beginning. It was really unfortunate how King's Cage ended, with Mare and Cal both broken-hearted, so I wanted to see if the relationship between Cal and Mare would be fixed. Some of Evangeline’s chapters helped us learn more about her, also her sass is just everything and adds that extra spice to the story. The ending battle was intense but done very well, actually, all of the battles were and the details were fantastic. Speaking of the details, the writing in this book is exceptional, it felt as if I were watching a movie while reading it, which made it that much better. I wish there was more for me to say but ultimately, I was upset by the ending. It felt slightly abrupt and leaves you hanging on what could happen in the future. However, on the good side, there is a novella called Broken Throne, already out which might tie it all together so I'm looking forward to reading it soon. All in all, I did enjoy this book but not as much as I enjoyed the first two. I didn't walk away from this book thinking that was incredible and I will say that I feel that it could have been way shorter because some parts did drag causing it to become a bore. @laroi of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library Readers have come a long with with Mare Barrow - from the first book of daunting palace life, to betrayal/ rebellion (2nd, 3rd), and now the finale. It was a bit difficult bridging the gap between this book and the previous, in terms of names/ events, but not unmanageable. Here, our protagonist struggles between what she wants for the country/ people, and herself. As political matters start brimming around the edges and trust dissipates, she must ally with her Guard/ stand for equality. But with all the power spinning around a few critical players in a game, is there ever a winner? A nice 4/5 stars. - @Siri of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
