Like most Hollywood directors, Tamara Jenkins rarely misses a chance to "schlock it up". The first half is OK second rate Solondz (Happiness [Hoffmann is much better here as a obscene phone caller]; Life During Wartime.) As the movie progresses, Jenkins starts applying mushy sentimentality and annoying bathos. The end is totally beyond belief in it's quest for the old "happy ending".
