Sometimes there is luck and sometimes there is serendipity. The difference, I think, is that luck is random and serendipity happens because it is meant to. Twelve-year-old Nicky and her father find a baby in the woods near their home while they are snowshoeing. This discovery changes them and helps them recover parts of their lives that have remained chained to the past. This book could be a recitation of tragic events, but instead through her quiet prose and stunning descriptions Anita Shreve has created a masterpiece.
